Part 1: Classification and Features of Subtitles

Currently, there are two types of subtitles, image and text subtitles.

Image subtitle is made of IDX and SUB file. The IDX file is the index file telling the player where to place the subtitles on the screen and also to give them various font styles. The SUB file is the text. The size of such subtitle file is large, usually over 10MB, and we need to compress it to be .rar file for storage saving. Since the combination of IDX and SUB subtitle file can save subtitles of multi-languages, it is convenient to switch subtitles when we are watching the video.

Text subtitle usually means the SRT, SMI and SUB (different data layout from what mentioned above) file. The file size is usually small, around 100KB.

Part 2: What’s SRT Subtitle?

SRT subtitle is a kind of text subtitles. The file size is usually small, around 100KB. It only contains time line and text. This easy way to make and modify subtitles is welcomed pretty much.

Part 3: How to Make SRT Subtitle?

As mentioned above, it is very easy to make SRT subtitle. Next, we will tell you how to do in details.

① Add a new file. Create a new file and set the file extension as “srt”.

② Double-click at the file to write the subtitles. The writing rule is shown in the below image. You should type the label, the start/end time and content for each subtitle. The label can start from 0/1 to 2, 3, 4 ……; the time duration should be hh:mm:ss:ms.

③ The below image shows two subtitles. Even though you put a line feed between a subtitle, the second line of the subtitle can be displayed in the player.

④ Finally, save the SRT subtitle.

TipsNote of writing subtitles:

● Comma and full stop are not necessary, or alternative with spaces. Question mark can be reserved.

● Use Marks, such as “-”, to distinguish dialogue and explanation.

● A subtitle should be displayed in a line better but bilingual subtitles should be on two lines.

2. Add SRT Subtitles to MP4 Video with Renee Video Editor Pro

① Download and launch Renee Video Editor Pro. Select [Video Toolbox].

② Click [Add Files] to select the target video.

③ Then, select [Load Subtitle] to add the SRT subtitles to the MP4 video.

Or, enter into the function Subtitle. Click the button [+] at the left corner and add the SRT subtitles into the MP4 video.

You can continue to modify the SRT file, too.

TipsIf you use the former method, style and position cannot be modified any more. But you can change the font color, style and position, and modify the subtitles through the later way.

④ Finally, back to the main interface. Select the output format and the output folder. When you click [Start], the software will begin adding the SRT subtitles to the MP4 video and save it to the destination folder.
