“CDA” the file extension of CD audio tracks, which should be the file format of CD-ROM. The CDA file, in fact, only contains the index information, without any actual sound information. No matter how large the CD files are, the CDA file in a CD is only 44 bytes. CDA is close to be the audio format for lossless compression. That is suitable for storing and restoring original sounds. Yet,, it can be merely played on CD player.

“MP3”, called as MPEG-3 for short, is the digital audio encoding and the format using lossy compression. If an audio file is contained in this format, some unnecessary audio parts will be removed. That can shrink the audio file size and reduce the space burden. What’s more, most of media players support MP3.

That being said, a CDA file can only be used in the specific device. We are unable to copy and play it on a hard disk. But, since MP3 is available in most of media player, we can convert CDA to MP3 and the CDA file can be played on the disk. The following methods are about how to convert CDA to MP3.

a. Download and install Renee Audio Tools.

b. Insert the CD into the computer slot.

c. Launch Renee Audio Tools and select [CD Ripper].

d. Click [Add Files] > [Audio CD]. Then, select the target CD files.

e. Then, a dialog box will pop up and ask you select the files. Select and click [OK] to go on. After that, select [MP3] in [Output Format] and click [Start] to extract the audio files.

f. Finally, a window will tell you that these CDA files have been successfully converted to MP3. Click [OK] to finish.

2. Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player, called as “WMP” or “WMPlayer” for short, is a free media player developed by Microsoft. The application is built in Windows. MP3, WMA and WAV are supported in it. It also supports to extract the audio tracks from CD and rip audios to CD.

a. Open Windows Media Player.

b. Right-click at any blank place and select [Tools] > [Options].

c. In the tab [Rip Music], set the location to save the ripped files, check [Rip CD automatically] or [Eject CD after ripping] and select the audio quality.

d. Inset the CD into the slot. Then, WMP will pop up a dialog to ask you whether you need to modify the current settings. Please select [Keep my current format settings] and click [OK]. Next, the CD will be ripped. Finally, go to the storage location and check the files.

3. iTunes

iTunes, a multimedia player developed by Apple Inc., can not only play audios and videos but also rip CD.

a. Download and open iTunes.

b. Click [Edit] at the Menu. Then, click [Preferences] > [Improt Settings]. Then, in [Import Using], select [MP3 Encoder] and click [OK].

c. Then, insert the target CD into the slot. Click the round button at the top left; select the files and click [File] > [Convert] > [Create MP3 version]. Wait for the process being finished.

Part 3: Summary

Since CDA file doesn’t store the sound information and it is only about the index information, it cannot be directly copied to the hard disk and played. If you want to play CDA files on the other devices, you should rip them from CD and convert to MP3 or the other suitable formats.
