In 2014, a personality analysis app created by psychology professor Aleksandr Kogan was downloaded by 270,000 Facebook users. The app, which offered a “test personality, receive bonus” feature, was part of a partnership between Kogan’s Global Scientific Research (GSR) and Cambridge Analytica. Users who took the personality tests consented to their data being collected for academic research purposes.

To increase participation, a $5 bonus is offered to users who complete simple, non-intrusive entertainment-style questions. The app developer, a psychology professor from the University of Cambridge, sold this data, which encompassed users’ Facebook profiles and “likes,” to Cambridge Analytica in one of the largest data breaches experienced by the tech industry.

Numerous games and quizzes that appear innocuous on various websites are actually designed to collect personal information. They do this by soliciting data directly from Facebook, mirroring the social media giant’s approach to user information. (1) Open the software Renee File Protector, and then click “Encrypt File” in “General” in the left menu column. Then add a new file or folder, and click “Encrypt to gfl” or “Encrypt to exe“. Next, select the storage path for encryption and click Save. (Take “Encrypt to exe” as an example below”.)
