1. What is Frame per Second?

Frame per second (FPS) is a unit that measures display device performance. It consists of the number of complete images of the display screen that occur each second.

Generally, in a human’s visual system, the sensitivity to time and resolution depends on the type of visual stimulus. A human is able to process 10 to 12 static images per second. That is to say, in a video at 12fps or even lower, we can quickly consider it as pieces of images instead of moving objects. Once the fame rates reach to 16 to 24fps, these images will be perceived as motion, which is usually called as video.

Frame per second is the standard measuring whether a video or game run smoothly or not. If a video or game cannot reach to certain frames per second, jerky motions will occur. Basically, if the number is greater, the images on the screen will be refreshed more quickly, frequently and smoothly.

2. What is Different among 24fps, 30fps and 60fps?

24fps

24fps is the universally accepted frame rate, used to transfer the video signal to the film in the past. Currently, movie suppliers also use this frame rate. If you want to produce videos or films, you can record them at this rate.

30fps

30fps is commonly used in news, TV drama and online videos. If you want to share videos online, you can edit at this rate.

60fps

Videos at 60fps can play back more smoothly and fluently. It is widely accepted in high definition TVs and games.

Here are the videos at 24fps, 30fps and 60fps. It is obvious that the video at 60fps plays back more fluently than those at 30fps and 24fps.

Now, you can see that the video at the greater frame rate can play back more fluently. 24fps, 30fps and 60fps are universal, but they are used in different environments.

24fps is used in films and 30fps is welcomed in the full-motion TVs and videos. The ultra HD equipment usually plays videos at 60fps.

3. Is it Good to Have More Frame Rates?

As we know, the display screen is composed by pieces of images. Then, these consecutive images are shown one by one, which causes motion capture. Of course, smooth, fluent and vivid animation can be realized at the higher frame rate.

That is to say, the more frames can be displayed per second, the character will perform more fluent movements. Does it mean that we should pursue more frame rates?

In fact, a video or a game at the higher rate contains much more data, not convenient for storage and data transfer. Those who are familiar with video editing and animation production know that it is very hard to handle with the video at the higher rate because the file size is huge and it takes a longer time to render the video.

In addition, at 100fps or above, we seldom perceive the fluency improvement. These greater frames per second are merely used in high-speed cameras for very slow-motion photography. The slow-motion effects can catch viewers’ eyes on the critical video screens.

For example, when we watch the automobile race, a blast of wind felt by ourselves tells us that the cars roared past. We cannot catch sight of any car. While if we shoot the game at a high frame per second, we can see all details, the racing process and the car models included.

What’s more, the video at the higher frames per second should be displayed on the high-end devices that support it or even higher parameters. Yet, these products are expensive pretty much. All in all, we should select a suitable frame rate based on what you want to achieve.

Steps:

① Download and install Renee Video Editor Pro. Then, open it and select [Video Toolbox].

5. What is Refresh Rate? Is it Different from Frame Rate?

Refresh rate is the unit that measures the frequency with which the image on a display screen is refreshed, usually expressed in hertz (Hz). Each time the display screen is refreshed, the screen will be redrawn onto the displayer by progressive or interlaced scanning. Interlaced scanningwas used in the earlier displayer while progressive scanning is prevailing now.

Frame per second is the frequency that measures the number of frames is shown on a screen per second. Refresh rate determines the number of effective frames shown on the displayer. If the frame rate is higher than the refresh rate, the rest of frames cannot work for any image improvement. Even worse, the video screen will go cracking and abnormal.

Part 2: Game Frame Rates VS Video Frame Rates

Like videos, games at higher frames per second will be displayed more smoothly and fluently. We notice that the video at 60fps is smooth but the 30fps video cannot be perceived as jerky motions. Yet, this gap in games is obvious.

Especially, in some FPS gun games, the frame per second is critical. If these games are expected to run smoothly, they have to reach to 30fps to 60fps at least because the game frame rates and video frame rates are different.

1. Different Principles of Image Formation

In each video, a frame includes the information at a period of time. Yet, in a game, a frame can merely contain the information at an instant. Under the film/sensor’s exposure, the photographer will shoot an actual scene at which everything continuously changes, not merely some instant images.

In such period of time, although the character and the scene are changing, this process is complete and consecutive, along with some blurred images called as motion blur.

We should know that the game screen is generated from the graphics card. The graphics card calculates frames one by one, which can keep each frame clear. No matter how fast the frames change, the graphics card only accounts for the frame generation, not the motion trail included. This generation way causes that each image is single and no motion blur appears in games.

Take a movement as an example. When we slowly wave our hands, this movement can be shot very clearly. Yet, when we wave quickly, we can watch the shadows from the video but not feel the motion jerky. That is what a video can achieve.

When we are playing games, it is absolutely OK to slowly move the mouse. If we move it in rush, we can see that the mouse cannot move smoothly.

2. Issues on Stability

Some people wonder why the video frame rates are stable while the same frame rates in a game cannot be. For example, the 30fps video will be refreshed per 1/30 second. This frequency is fixed and stable.

As for the game at 30 frames per second, the well-performing graphics card can generate a frame per 1/30 second. If this frequency is stable, the time intervals will be stable between frames and the screens will appear smoothly.

However, if the graphics card is underperforming, it may generate 29 frames at half of a second and leave one frame at last. At such situation, the time interval will be not stable and the screens will be jerky.
