Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a high-definition DVD format introduced in 2006 to replace DVDs. It offers 1080p and 4K resolution playback with a storage capacity of 25-50G, ideal for high-definition movies and video games. Blu-ray provides higher quality video and audio playback compared to DVDs.

Things to Note Before Ripping Blu-ray

Ensure your computer has an optical drive or an external DVD/Blu-Ray drive. Make sure your computer has enough disk space as Blu-ray movies can take up 20-60GB.

② Select the video source, audio source to be recorded, and the location where the recorded file needs to be saved. After the setting is complete, open the Blu-ray movie page to be recorded.

③ Click the Start Recording button, drag the option box to select the video area, then click (record) in the lower right corner. If “full screen” is selected, the software will start recording immediately.

④ During the recording process, you can pause or continue at any time. After recording, click the small square button in the recording box in the lower right corner to save the recorded video clips to the path you originally set.

2. Use VLC media player to rip Blu-ray disc

If you want to rip movies or other content from Blu-ray discs to your computer, then VLC media player can help you very well. It can easily rip DVD, Blu-ray, Audio CD and even Video CD (SVCD or VCD), and convert to various popular video or audio formats.

① First, you need to insert the Blu-ray disc into the disc drive in your computer. Next, open the VLC media player software, click (Media) > (Convert/Save (R)).

② In the opened window, click the (Disc) option and select (Blu-ray) > (No Disc menu). Then find the Blu-ray disc to be ripped in the drop-down menu of the disc device, and click (Convert/Save).

③ Select a configuration profile, such as (Video – H.264 + MP3 (MP4)), and select the save location of the target file. Finally click (Start) and wait for the file conversion to complete.

3. Use MakeMKV to rip Blu-ray discs

MakeMKV software is a format converter that can rip DVD and Blu-ray discs to the common MKV video format. The MKV format can store multiple video/audio tracks with all meta information and keep chapters. Many players support playing MKV files. The software is available for Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems. If you want to rip Blu-ray discs for free, please download and use the Beta version of MakeMKV.

① First, you need to install MakeMKV software on your computer. Then before ripping the Blu-ray disc, you need to put the Blu-ray disc into the optical drive and open the MakeMKV software. After a few moments, the software detects the disc and displays it automatically. However, if you have more than one DVD drive, you will need to pull down the (Source) menu and select the correct optical drive.

② Then, click (DVD drive icon), the program will start to scan the Blu-ray disc. After the scan is complete, it will display all “chapters” on the disc. If you just want to save the movie, check the box to select it, then under “Title” choose the language and subtitle you want. Finally, please select the storage location of the ripped file in the (Output folder) on the right, and click (Make MKV) to start ripping after the settings are completed. Blu-ray discs are relatively large in file size, so you may have to wait longer.
