Part 1: What is BitLocker

BitLocker is a full disk encryption feature equipped in Microsoft Windows versions starting with Windows Vista. It is designed to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes. By default, it provides 3 encryption modes: transparent operation mode, user authentication mode and USB key mode. Besides, Encrypting File System could be used in conjunction with BitLocker to provide protection once the operating system is running. In Active Directory environments, BitLocker supports optional key escrow to Active Directory.

BitLocker is only available on Pro, Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 10. Home is not included.

How to Use BitLocker:

Step 1: Right-click the target disk in [My computer] and then please select [Turn on Bitlocker] in the menu.

Step 2: Select one way to unlock the Bitlocker protected disk.

Step 3: Here we choose “Enter a password” to be example. Please enter the password you want for the protected disk. After setting, please click “Next”.

Step 4: After setting the password, we can make a backup for the password.

Part 3: Category of BitLocker Recovery Key

Recovery Key Protector	Definition
TPM	A hardware helps to build up a root of trust measurement. BitLocker only supports TPM 1.2 or later.
PIN	Users can enter digits to unlock. Can be used except TPM.
Enhanced PIN	Users can enter digits and letters to unlock. Can be used except TPM.
Startup key	Can be saved in most portable devices. It can enhance the security with TPM or use only in PC without TPM.
Recovery password	A Recovery password is 48 digits, can unlock the volumes in recovery mode. Users can enter the password with keyboard. F1 – F10 can be used if the number does not work.
Recovery key	Saved in portable device and can be used to recover data from disk which is locked with BitLocker.

Part 4: How to Save Recovery Key and Password

Recovery key and recovery password of system disk or data storage disk can be saved in folder, one or more USB disks or Microsoft account. Besides, users can also print to save the password.

Network manager can also set the Group Configuration to create recovery password automatically. And then save them in any Active Directory of server which can be protected with BitLocker.

Advantages: With the help from TPM, BitLocker can protect Windows system and user data from modification, software attack and stolen when nobody around the PC, get stolen or lost.

Disadvantages: Only can encrypt whole disk. Can not be hidden. And Windows Home edition is not able to use this function.

1. Download and install Renee SecureSilo.

2. Enter the password to open the software. If you are a new user, you should set the password.

3. Click [Encrypt Files] > [Create Silo] to create a virtual disk.
