Summary
If you have Sony or Panasonic camera, you should have already known what is MTS file. This article will introduce what MTS file format is and what kind of software to open it.

Part 1: What is MTS file format?

MTS file is a video file with suffix “mts”. The file with MTS extension is most likely an AVCHD video file, but it also could be a large tree session file or even a MadTracker file.

MTS file usually use H.264 video compression and AC-3 audio compression. MTS files supports full high-definition standard resolution of 1440*1080 and 1920*1080. MTS is the product of the HD era.

MTS file supports 1080i and 720p video mode. It includes menu navigation on providing access to single video, slideshow on displaying AVC static frame sequence with background audio, and subtitle on recording the timestamp.

MTS file format was designed by Panasonic and Sony for HDV device. Canon, JVC and Sanyo camera are also use MTS file now. If such videos saved in camcorders, the suffix of them will have an “.mts” file extension. If we edit or import these videos to computer, the suffix of these videos will be saved with an m2ts extension.

Part 2: How to open mts files

Being a video format, MTS files can be opened in 2 ways. One is to open it through the player that supports MTS format, the other is to convert MTS file into the common video format with the format conversion software. Then open it with the ordinary player.

Apporach 1: Play with Software that Supports MTS File Format

MTS files can be played directly with the media player on the computer. Supported software could be various from system.
