Part 1: What is TS?

TS (Transport Stream), fully known as MPEG-2 TS, is the standard digital container format for transmission and storage of audio, video, and Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) data. It is used in broadcast systems such as DVB, ATSC and IPTV. Later it was adapted for use with digital video cameras, recorders and players by adding a 4-byte timecode (TC) field to the standard 188-byte packets, resulting in a 192-byte packet.

TipsMPEG2 is the multiplexing technology for multimedia transmission. That can provide hundreds of channels in digital television broadcasting. In MPEG-2 standard, 2 streams can be output to the communication channel, PS (program stream) and TS (transport stream). The former one is suitable for the scene that doesn’t allow transmission error and the latter one is for the transmission scene with channel noise.

PS is used in the stable and reliable media, such as DVD and CD disc. TS designed for less reliable transmission, namely terrestrial or satellite broadcast. Logically, they are PES (packetized elementary streams). Therefore, they can be converted to each other.

TS streams encapsulate data into a transmission package, including video, audio and PSI, used for program transmission.

Part 2: Application Scope of TS

Generally, TS is widely used in these fields:

● Radio and television

TS is usually used in the broadcasting system, such as DVB and ATSC. Transport stream specifies a container format, with error correction and synchronization pattern features for maintaining transmission integrity when the communication channel carrying the stream is degraded. It is often used in digital HD TV programs.

● Real-time streaming media

HTTP Live Streaming, developed by Apple, splits video streams or transmits part by part. Or, it plays videos sequentially through the given addresses of the TS files.

● Blue disc/full HD video

TS, encapsulated by MPEG-2 or VC-1, is also the container format of blue-ray disc and full HD videos. Generally, such TS files are high-quality, large and accurate. This format is favored by those who like HD videos.

● Digital camera

TS is adapted for use with digital video cameras, recorders and players by adding a 4-byte time code field. It is also used to synchronize video streams from several cameras in a multiple-camera setup.

Part 3: How to Open TS Files?

When TS files are saved in DVD, they are usually named as “moviename1.ts”, “moviename2.ts” and “moviename3.ts”, and they are played in the DVD player. Although TS files can be opened in high definition camera and blue-ray DVD, they are incompatible with the multimedia players, portable players and some video editors.

Steps:

① First, download and install Renee Video Editor Pro.

② Open the software and select [Video Toolbox].

2. Use FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the free, open-source multimedia framework. It supports to convert many audio/video formats through the command lines. If you don’t know how to write command lines, we suggest using the above method.

Steps:

① Download and install FFmpeg. Then, press the keys [Win + R]; type into [cmd].

② If you want to convert TS to MP4, type the command [C:\Windows\System32\ffmpeg.exe –i D:\TS\Peace.ts D:\Peace.mp4] and press the Enter key to run.

Note: [D:\TS\Peace.ts] is the file position and name; [D:\Peace.mp4] represents the file format, the name of the converted file and the converted format.
