Part 1: About MP2

1. What is MP2?
MP2 is the short name of MPEG-1 Layer II, the lossy audio format whose file extension is “.mp2”. For radio and TV production, MP2 is one of the common formats. It is mainly used in the standard digital audio broadcasting (DAB), digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and digital video broadcasting (DVB). The audio format of the standard MPEG II supports the sampling rate of 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz, and the bit rate from 32 kbps to 320 kbps.

Note: The MP2 audio file is different with the MPEG-2 video file. MPEG-2 is the standard video encoding, and its file extension is “.mpg”.

Pros:

When the bit rate of MP2 reaches to 256 kbps or more, it has the error recovery capacity and well audio quality. It is also the audio standard in radio and TV production.
Compared with MP3, MP2 outputs better audio quality.

Cons:

It is not supported well by the common audio players. We need to convert the format before playing in these players.

2. MP2 and MP3
Both of MP2 and MP3 are the lossy audio formats, but they are not identical. From the aspect of audio data, MP2 compress less than MP3. The compression ratio of MP2 is between 6:1 and 8:1 while that of MP3 is within 10: 1 and 12: 1. Therefore, MP3 is more popular for online information spread due to the small file size. From the aspect of application, MP3 is widely used in computer, Internet and audio players while MP2 is mainly applied in digital radio and television broadcasts.

How to convert:

① First, install Renee Audio Tools and then select [Converter].

② Click [Add Files] to select the target MP2 file.

① Download and install FFmpeg. Then press [Win + R] and type [cmd] in the box Run. Click [OK] to continue.

② If you want to convert MP2 to MP3, just type this command: C:\Windows\System32\ffmpeg.exe-i F:\example.mp2 F:\example.mp3.

Note: “F:\example.mp2” is the folder and name of the target file; “F:example.mp3” is the folder, name and format that you want to save and convert.
