What is M2TS File and How to Play and Edit?

Summary
It is believe that many people are quite unfamiliar with the files in M2TS format, so what is it? File format of M2TS will be introduced here. By the way, methods about how to edit and convert M2TS files will be provided here.
1. What is M2TS File?
M2TS is a high definition coded video file format, which is encoded in the MPEG-4AVC/H.264 format. This file format is usually used for high-definition Blu-ray disc and high-definition video on AVCHD.
Users can get M2TS files by copying files directly from the purchased Blu-ray disc. For us, this format is the original video format, while other file formats (such as mp4, RMVB, etc.) circulated on the Internet are all based on this file format. The quality of m2ts file is the same as that of Blu-ray original disk.
There is another file with the extension of MTS that appears on AVCHD devices. Its internal format is the same with M2TS, which can be converted to M2TS by the Picture Motion Browser program of Sony.

2. What Device or Player Can Open the M2TS File?
Most of the M2TS files can be played with Windows Media Player, ALLPlayer, MPlayer, PotPlayer, VLC(Linux、Mac OS、Windows) and other players, while some players need to install the appropriate codec, component, or plug-in to play it.
To open the M2TS files on more devices or devices, you can also convert the M2TS files to other common formats.
3. How to Edit and Convert M2TS Files?

Edit the M2TS File
① Download and install the Renee Video Editor Pro on your computer.
② Open the software, select [Video Toolbox] and enter the video editing interface.
③ Click [Add Files] to select the M2TS video file you want to edit.
④ Cut video. Click [Cut] to access the cutting page, drag the progress bar freely or set precise cutting time in the start and end time bar to cut out the exciting fragments you want.
⑤Partial cropping. Click the [Rotate & Crop] function, drag the cropping box in the cropping page or set a cropping size value in the cropping area size bar to intercept part of video, such as removing the black bars and white bars from video.
⑥ Rotate the video. On the [Rotate and Crop] page, your video can be rotated, flipped horizontally and vertically through one-click.
⑦ Add special effects. Click the [Effect] function to enter into the effects page. Then add a variety of filter effects, partial reduction and amplification effects, volume increase and reduction effects to your video.
⑧ Add or remove watermarks. Click the [Watermark] function to enter into the watermark page, select [Watermark remover] and cover the removal box on the watermark to be removed. You can then add text, images, shape, or video watermarks to your video files.
⑨Add background music. Click the [Music] function to remove the original sound of video, and then add your favorite background music or dub to video.
⑩ Add subtitles. Click [Subtitle] and then add some lines and narration to your video. You can choose the font of subtitle and set the size and position of subtitle.
⑪ Merge videos. You also can upload several M2TS files and then check the [Merge all files into one] option, select the output format and click the [Start] button to save the merged video.
Files in M2TS format are not so popular and are not widely supported by devices and players. If you want it to play on more devices or players, please follow these steps to convert the M2TS format to common MP4 or other formats.
Convert the M2TS File to MP4 Format
① Open Renee Video Editor Pro and select [Video Toolbox].
② Click [Add Files] to select the M2TS file you want to convert.
③ Select the output format (such as MP4 format) to convert in the output format bar, which supports multiple devices and all common formats.
④ After selecting the output format, click the [Start] button to convert your M2TS file to other format and save it.
