Part 2: How to Fix Windows 10 Errors in WinRE
By default, Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is preloaded into the hidden partition when the system is partitioned. It can repair common causes of unbootable operating systems. Under WinRE, we can use different tools to maintain, restore, reset and reinstall the system to fix errors on Windows 10, without any third-party tool. Besides, WinRE can be installed into the other media. Then, this media (hard disk/USB/disc) can be the Windows boot media to recover the faulty system.
If Windows OS is unbootable or damaged, you should confirm the causes and then select the recovery tools. For example, the disk is damaged; the system file is corrupted or lost; the system update is hold. Here are the steps about how to operate under WinRE.
How to enter into WinRE:
● Press the power button when the Windows logo appears. Repeat this action three times. Soon, the system will enter into WinRE.
● From the login screen, click Shutdown, then hold down the Shift key while selecting [Restart].
● In Windows 10, select [Start] > [Settings] > [Update & security] > [Recovery] > under [Advanced Startup], click [Restart now].
● Boot to the recovery media when you’ve made.
After following one of the above methods, the computer gets into WinRE. You can click on [Troubleshoot] to select the advanced options to fix the system. Next, we will introduce 5 methods about how to use these options to fix errors on Windows 10.
Method 1: System Restore
System restore has been used in Windows XP. We can use a restore point recorded on PC to restore Windows. Each time when you install new apps and drivers, a new restore point will be generated. Of course, you can manually create a new point. The individual files will be affected when you restore Windows through such method. But those posterior to the point, such as the applications, drivers and the update package will be emptied.
Entry points: Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore
Select one of the restore point and click on [Next] to restore Windows.
Method 2: System Image Recovery
System image recovery is a kind of complete system restore. The system image will include all data used for Windows, such as system settings, files, applications and application settings. We suggest that you save the system image in the external device. Next time, you can recover Windows using a specific system image file.
Entry points: Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Image Recovery
Steps:
① First, you should connect the disk saving the recovery image to the computer.
② Restart the computer to get into WinRE. Click on [Troubleshoot] > [Advanced Options] > [System Image Recovery].
③ After that, select the current account and enter the passcode to login. If you never set any passcode, please go to the next step.
④ Use the latest available system image by default or click to check [Select a system image]. Then, click on [Next].
⑤ Finally, begin to recover the computer from the system image. Please ensure power supply in this process.
Method 3: Startup Repair
When Windows is unbootable, try to use system repair. It can fix problems that keep Windows from loading. You don’t need to control the computer when the fix processing is ongoing. However, if your computer is affected by virus, you cannot use this method to fix Windows 10.
Under WinRE, you can write command lines to run the programs and process files in batch. This method is suitable for those who are good at writing commands. You can fix the boot record, modify the registry, fix the lost or corrupted system files, and back up and manage partitions. It is noted that only the administrator be allowed to use Command Prompt.
In Command Prompt, please type [sfc/scannow] to scan and fix the system. The process is quite long.
2. Rebuild BCD and fix MBR
When Windows is unbootable, you can rebuild BCD to fix MBR. In Command Prompt, you can try these commands one by one:
● bootrec /fixmbr
● bootrec /fixboot
● bootrec /rebuildbcd
Finally, restart the computer to check whether it works normally.
3. Run chkdskk
Errors on disks usually make Windows run abnormally. You can run the command [chkdsk/r] to scan the disks for logical errors and bad sectors. They will be fixed during the scan but the data may be lost. For example, if you want to check C disk, type [chkdsk /r c:] in Command Prompt.
Method 5: Reset PC
If you reset your computer, it will be factory reset and all data will be emptied from the disks. Reset doesn’t mean reinstallation. Resetting PC is factory resetting the WIM image from the hidden recovery partition. When resetting the computer, you can empty all hard disks or keep your personal files.
Entry points: Troubleshoot > Reset this PC
After getting into [Reset this PC], select [Keep my files] or [Remove everything]. That later option is more time consuming.
