- Does Windows Media Player have any reason to exist?
Summary
A few days ago, Microsoft suggested that users who use Windows Media Player(hereinafter referred to as WMP)should turn to movies and TV applications. When Windows 10 has come, WMP is almost forgotten by Microsoft and it isn’t useful to exist in the eyes of Microsoft.
The first edition of WMP originally appeared in the 1992 Windows 3.1. In 2000 Microsoft added Stream function to WMP. Moreover, Microsoft install WMP8 in Windows XP in 2001.
With the rapid development of Internet, there are more and more pirated audios and videos. Gradually relevant standards against it come out and the companies that comply with the standards have related patent. Microsoft, which is a big company, would not do something for patent infringement. Therefore, the formats that WMP supported are becoming less. In other words, Microsoft has been losing users.
WMP had been updated to the version 12 when Windows 7 was launched. Even though there is the latest Windows 10,the built-in WMP is still version 12 without any updates. Starting Windows 7, WMP has been declining.
As for loyal users of Windows Media Player, an easy to use free video format converting software Renee Video Editor could help you convert the unsupported formats like AVI and RMVB can be converted to WMA, WMV, etc. Then, you can continue to play and manage audio or video by using Windows Media Player.
