Summary
BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) is a very common issue in Windows. When BSoD occurs, Windows usually can’t boot. But sometimes Windows works again after you restart the PC. We need to find out the reasons of BSoD before fixing it. Next, let’s learn about the common reasons and solutions of BSoD.
BSoD (Blue Screen of Death) means that an error screen appears on a Windows computer due to a fatal system error and the operating system can’t run properly.
Reasons and Solutions of BSoD
Reason 1: Install New Program or Hardware
- If you have installed new software or hardware, BSoD may occur. Besides, running many software at the same time will make the CPU Usage stay high.
- When system is running, all data is processed via computer memory. BSoD may also occur if the computer memory gets damaged.
- If you find the laptop you are using is hot and the fan inside runs loudly, you need to have a check of the fan which probably fails to work.
Solution: Check the hardware
Step 1: Remove all external devices such as USB drive, network cable, external hard drive, etc.
If there is any problem of these external devices, it could cause the BSoD.
Step 2: Open the computer case and remove the computer memory. Then remove the dust off and install it again. Then restart the PC.
Step 3: If BSoD error still occur, there could be the problem of computer memory. If there are several computer memories installed on the PC, just remove the one that’s not compatible with the PC. Or you can choose to replace it.
Reason 2: Computer Is Infected with a Virus
BSoD error can also be caused by computer virus especially when MBR and boot sector are infected.
Solution: Fix damaged MBR
Windows Recovery, a function of Renee PassNow, can help you fix MBR. This tool is free to use.
Solution : Fix MBR with System Rescue Tool Renee PasssNow
Windows Recovery, one of the functions of Renee PassNow, can fix MBR as well. It’s free to use. Step 1: Download and install Renee Passnow in any Windows computer which can login and work normally. Then connect USB disk/CD/DVD to computer and Launch Renee Passnow.
Step 2: Open the software. Select one option from [Crate a Live USB] and [Create a Live CD]. Then, select [x64] or [x86] according to your computer. Next, click on [Download Now] to download the licensed ISO. Remember to activate the software beforehand. After that, click on [Create USB] to create the boot media.
Step 3: Connect the created rescue USB/CD to target computer.
If you create a rescue USB, select “Removable Devices” to be the first. If you create a rescue CD, then select “CD-ROM Drive” as the first boot choice. Finally, save and restart computer.
Step 5: Select “Windows Recovery” function after booting from the new created Windows password reset disk.
Step 6: Select “Fix CHS Parameters in MBR” then choose the disk and click “Fix MBR”. After fixing, please restart computer.
Reason 3: Bad Sectors on Hard Drive
The same with computer memory, hard drive also need to handle some data process work. If there’s error in the sector that stores system files, the system will not work and BSoD will also appear.
Solution: Detect hard drive
Step 1: Remove the hard drive from the PC and connect the hard drive to another workable computer with hard disk enclosure. Download the
hard disk detection tool - HDD-SCAN. Next, run the tool and scan the hard drive.
Step 2: While the tool is scanning, you can find the bad sectors via “Map”. You can click and get more about
how to repair bad sectors.
Reason 4: Software Conflicts
If you have installed malware, updated software recently or the software isn’t compatible with the system, BSoD error may also happen.
Solution: Uninstall the recently updated or installed software
Step 1: Turn on the PC and sign in safe mode. (For
Windows 7 users, please directly
press F8. For
Windows 8/10 users, please read the page about
how to sign in safe mode.)
Step 2: After you enter safe mode, you can uninstall the applications that have been installed or updated recently via “Control Panel” or “Apps & Feature”.
Reason 5: System Files Are Missing or Damaged
Once system files are missing or get damaged, the operating system won’t boot properly. And the BSoD happens.
Solution: Use System File Checker to repair system files
Step 1: Connect Windows installation USB to computer and start the computer.
Step 2: Change boot order in BIOS setup and put “Removable Devices” as the first boot choice.
Step 3: After you go into the Windows installation screen, press “Shift” + “F10” key at the same time to launch the Command Prompt.
Step 4: In the Command Prompt, type in: sfc /scannow. Press “Enter”. System File Checker will automatically scan for and repair the corrupted system files. Please restart the PC after the repair process completes.
You will receive a message “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation” if your operating system files are not corrupted or missing.
If above methods can’t solve your BSoD problem, it will be necessary to restore or reinstall the system. To prevent data loss, it’s suggested to backup or transfer important data from the PC in advance.
You can try the system rescue tool, Renee PassNow. Even though you can’t sign in Windows due to the BSoD error, data transfer, one of the functions of Renee PassNow, can help you transfer important files from the PC. Please refer to detailed instructions on how to transfer data with Renee PassNow.
Besides, if you lost important data because of BSoD error, you can try “Undeleter” (also one of the functions of Renee PassNow) to
recover data.
